Bellevue Dentist Dr Cynthia Pauley says focus on your smile. Your mouth is a complex system and many scientists believe that gum disease can potentially influence other parts of your body and have harmful effects. Therefore, take care of yourself by focusing on your smile. If you have a vibrant and beautiful smile it indicates that you have a healthy mouth and this in turn should be good for other parts of your body. If you your smile is right, you will feel right also.
There are many things that you can do with the help of your cosmetic dentist to improve your smile if there is anything that needs improvement. Research indicates that a majority of people are either not happy with their current smile or would like to improve their smile to make it more beautiful. Also remember that according to current research that having a beautiful smile, even if it is cosmetically improved, will make you appear more attractive and popular with the opposite sex. You will seem more intelligent, interesting and successful. Additionally, remember that research indicates that attractive smiles can help get you a more rewarding job and more friends. Most people want to associate with attractive and successful individuals.
It is not surprising that people’s teeth and their smiles are so highly valued when surveying both women and men, because it is one of the first things about people that are noticed when first meeting. Most people quickly notice a beautiful or handsome smile, but they also notice a very poor smile. A poor smile is greatly accented if there are missing, crooked or discolored teeth. In consultation with your Bellevue Cosmetic Dentist you can choose one or more of the following options to change your smile.

•Brighten your teeth with whitening, bonding or porcelain veneers.
•Restore chips and cracks in teeth and close spaces between teeth.
•Straighten crooked, twisted or crowded teeth.
•Alter the shape, width and length of your teeth so they blend with your gums and lips.
•Change the contour your gum line with a soft laser to eliminate a “gummy” smile.

There are many other things that can be done to improve your smile, but these things can eliminate many of the problems that prevent you from having an attractive and beautiful smile. For additional information about changing your smile contact Dr Pauley at info@brooksidedental.com.
Dr Cynthia Pauley, Bellevue Cosmetic Dentist, recently was elected as the new President of the Seattle-King County Dental Society (SKCDS) in April 2010. She has served as Secretary of SKCDS and also as a member of the SKCDS Executive Council for 8 years, during which time she was a delegate to the Washington State Dental Association for two terms. During her time on the Executive Council, she been involved in several projects to help the under served citizens of King County, including working on the Smile Mobile which serves people in out lying areas. Currently, she is involved with projects that include “The Northwest Kidney Foundation” and SKCDS Dentists working together on the dentistry care needs of kidney transplant candidates and assisting them to get validated for the new kidney list. Dr Cindy recently has written two articles for the SKCDS Quarterly titled, and “ The Beginnings of Something Great: A Joint Effort to Support Kidney Patients” (2008) and “A Morning with Medical Teams International” (2010). These articles detail individual projects involving the efforts to bring dental services to the under served people in the Seattle-King County area. The mission statement of SKCDS, “We are behind every smile in King County”, is actively being carried out by Dr Cynthia Pauley, a Bellevue Dentist. The overall goal is to have as many members of the SKCDS working toward this as a common goal. Certainly, a major goal is to see that young children receive adequate dental care and exhibit an overall reduction rate of childhood cavities. Dr Cindy has been a Bellevue Dentist in the Seattle Area since graduating from dental school at the University of the Pacific in 1992. Along with her mother, Dr Patricia Pauley, they practice family dentistry with an emphasis on Bellevue Cosmetic Dentistry.

Since its founding in 1892, the Seattle-King County Dental Society has promoted the highest levels of oral health for the citizens of King County. Through various venues they provided essential support, dental information and educational opportunities for dental professionals practicing dentistry within King County. The overview page of SKCDS provides more information about resources that are provided to the general public and to dental health professionals. The Seattle-King County Dental Society is a membership organization of approximately 1,700 dentists practicing in greater King County, Washington. It is the largest professional dental organization based in Washington State and is a major component society of both the Washington State Dental Association and the American Dental Association. The Seattle-King County Dental Foundation, established in 1992, works in association with the Sea-King Society to provide access to dental care for many of the neglected and poorer citizens of King County. The Foundation also supports dental educational programs for members of the public and for healthcare professionals. Each year the Foundation has an annual auction which is attended by hundreds of dentists and their spouses, which brings in several hundred thousand dollars to help finance the various projects of the society.

Three Beautiful Smiles at Brookside Dental Staff Gathering

Bellevue Dentists at Brookside Dental are always striving to stay on the cutting edge of new technology in the field of Dentistry. Dental technology is constantly evolving and developing new methods, procedure and equipment to make visits to the dentist more rewarding and pleasant. Our newest patient-friendly acquisition at Brookside Dental has these Bellevue Cosmetic Dentists using the Odyssey soft-tissue laser to create beautiful new gum lines. The soft-tissue laser is used for sculpturing a new contour around the teeth resulting in a new more attractive gum line and overall smile. Whenever gum tissue does not have the correct contour for a beautifully aesthetic smile, the soft tissue laser can be used to reshape the gums painlessly. Anesthetic generally is not required for this process, because the pulse duration of the laser is so short that the reaction threshold of the nerves is not reached. This laser also can be used to sterilize periodontal pockets that are diseased areas around teeth, because it painlessly kills the germs found there. The soft-tissue laser also can be used to condition and rejuvenate the tissue around teeth so that exceptional dental restorations, tooth fillings and crowns, can be placed correctly and look beautiful, even if the tissue around the teeth is not in the best condition.

For many people, bright white teeth and a beautiful smile seem impossible, due to the fact that they have “small teeth” which exhibit a considerable amount of pink gum tissue. Generally, this is not caused by “short teeth”, but rather it is due to a gummy smile or excess gum tissue that shows at the time of smiling. People with this problem can obtain a beautiful smile that has a well proportioned gum to tooth relationship with soft-tissue laser gum sculpting. The soft-tissue laser offers a painless, minimally invasive, non-surgical, and extremely successful method to obtain a beautiful smile. The excess gum tissue needs to be eliminated so that your teeth will exhibit their natural length and beauty. Patients heal very quickly, with few problems, and with less discomfort than is usually associated with traditional gum surgery methods or crown lengthening. To insure that the proper gum to tooth ratio is achieved for a beautiful smile, it is important to chose a Bellevue Cosmetic Dentist that has had experience with this soft-tissue laser technique.

For most people with “short teeth” or a “gummy smile”, the dentists at Brookside Dental, Bellevue, WA, will be able to reshape your gums to painlessly create a beautiful new smile with the Odyssey soft-tissue laser. In a very few people that have this laser contouring of the gums, there may be a need to refer them to a dental specialist for some crown lengthening that would involve surgical removal of some of the bony tissue around the teeth. Your Bellevue Dentist at Brookside Dental will be able to quickly evaluate whether or not you will need additional surgery. The case with most people is that only simple soft-tissue laser sculpting will be sufficient to give you a fabulous new smile.
Kym’s Testimonial Video on YOUTUBE discusses her Brookside Dental porcelain veneers which were used to create her new smile.

With Bellevue Porcelain Veneers the shape, shade and whiteness that you want for your teeth can all be done by your Bellevue Cosmetic Dentist at Brookside Dental. We are able to serve our patients in a high quality manner because we have an on-site porcelain artist that will make a new smile just as you would imagine it by individually crafting your new porcelain veneers.

PORCELAIN VENEER USES

A Bellevue Porcelain Veneer can also be named a dental veneer, a porcelain veneer or a dental laminate. Porcelain veneers are a more recent and successful development in the field of cosmetic dentistry. They are extremely thin sheets of porcelain that are attached to the front side of a tooth and they also cover the biting edge of the tooth. They create beautiful new smiles because they are a wonderful solution for a variety of dentistry problems that include teeth that are stained, chipped, or slightly misaligned. Bellevue Cosmetic Dentists use porcelain veneers for new beautiful smile makeovers by every day. They are used to close gaps between teeth, to cover chipped teeth, to help improve a gummy smile, to make short teeth longer, and to generally improve the overall smile for anyone that does not like the appearance of their smile.

Smile before treatment with Porcelain Veneers

Beautiful Smile after treatment with Porcelain Veneers

PORCELAIN VENEERS COMBINE ART AND SCIENCE

Bellevue Porcelain Veneers are an excellent example of combining art and science in the area of cosmetic dentistry to give a patient that beautiful smile that they desire. For decades dentists have had materials which can be bonded directly to teeth to make a new smile. However, by taking the bonding process a step farther, Cosmetic dentists now use the bonding capabilities of certain dental materials to securely attach thin sheets of porcelain to an individual tooth. These thin porcelain veneers are attached to cover both the front of the tooth and the biting surface of the tooth to give the appearance of a natural looking tooth. Although porcelain is inherently brittle, it becomes very strong and durable when it is attached to a sturdy substructure like a tooth.

Porcelain veneers are used to create new beautiful smiles instead of other types of cosmetic bonding material because the veneer becomes the permanent tooth covering that will create a very natural appearing tooth structure. Bellevue Porcelain Veneer coverings that have been used to create new smiles are not susceptible to tooth decay. A significant advantage of porcelain veneers over other types of cosmetic dentistry bonding is that porcelain is ceramic, or glass-like, giving it a surface that is extremely smooth and impervious. Because of this impervious feature, porcelain veneers will not pick up any permanent stains. Therefore, the color will not change because the porcelain veneers are resistant to stains such as tea, coffee, red wine, grape juice, and cigarette smoking.

BROOKSIDE DENTAL PORCELAIN VENEER PATIENT TESTIMONIAL

The magic of these beautiful porcelain veneers will keep Kym’s smile looking gorgeous indefinitely. Kym’s Testimonial is available on YOUTUBE regarding her new porcelain veneer smile.

Brookside Dental Cosmetic Dentist patient Kym gives video testimonial about how she had her smile changed with Bellevue Porcelain Veneers. This Bellevue Cosmetic Dentistry procedure was done to straighten and even her teeth and to eliminate visible chips at the biting edges of her teeth which then would generally change her smile. The result of the cosmetic restoration using this procedure is the beautiful smile exhibited in her portrait. Kym tells how she acquired a beautiful smile with porcelain veneers by Cosmetic Dentist Dr Pauley at Brookside Dental in Bellevue, WA. Kym also talks about how beautiful her teeth look, as well as how natural looking her beautiful smile is and that no one is able to know that the porcelain veneers are not her real teeth. She also talks about how many of her relatives now want to change their smiles by getting porcelain veneer.

BELLEVUE DENTIST DISCUSSES ACID EROSION IN CHILDREN

Children’s dietary habits can influence acid erosion, because young teeth have softer and thinner enamel than adult teeth. Studies have shown that many children have erosion of the dental enamel of at least one tooth. Orange juice although full of vitamins is a major culprit for young tooth erosion of the enamel.

Parents can take some steps to cut down on dental enamel erosion in their children. These include:

Limit the exposure of children to acid foods and drinks each day.

Do not let children sip juice all through the day.

Do not let children keep and swish acidic drinks around in their mouths.

Have children rinse their mouths with water after eating foods or having acidic drinks.

Children should brush their teeth regularly twice daily with a fluoride tooth paste.

Toothpaste that is specifically made to protect against acid erosion can be used.

COSMETIC DENTISTRY FOR MEN

Men are able to acquire attractive smiles with various Bellevue Cosmetic Dentistry procedures. Men are able to have increased physical attractiveness resulting from Cosmetic Dental work, because of their new beautiful smiles. Additionally, most men likely will become even more outgoing after altering or changing their smiles with Bellevue Cosmetic Dentists. Often they may find that their personal lives and work opportunities will improve. Often only a minor alteration, such as tooth whitening can improve a man’s smile, while an extreme makeover of the smile can improve the appearance of an exceptionally poor smile. This article discusses how a Cosmetic Dentist can be used to improve and create new their smiles for men.

Most articles about Cosmetic Dentistry show photos of beautiful women. However, this article is different because it does not show any photographs of beautiful women only handsome men of various ages that have new smiles. Cosmetic surgery photos, beauty ads, and nutritional advertisements are generally aimed at women. Therefore it is understandable that Cosmetic Dentists resort to the same thing in their advertising and on their websites where they show and display photographs of women with beautiful smiles. These beautiful smiles are one of the first physical features seen by a new person. These stunning smiles on men are also one of the initial attractions and a major influence on how attractive a face is perceived. Therefore, men need to know how to chose a Cosmetic Dentist the same as women. Trade magazines in dentistry, also exhibit beautiful smiles almost entirely on women. If men are shown, they are almost always shown with a beautiful women as a couple.

Recently, men of various ages are having cosmetic surgery performed such as hair transplants, face lifts and tummy tucks. Men want to look handsome and more youthful, the same as women want to appear more youthful and attractive. Men are having Cosmetic Dentistry performed in an effort to look better. Both women and men want more success at work and better personal lives. Some surveys have indicated that attractive people have more success in life and business than other people.

As always, this information is not in any way meant to replace a visit and examination by your own dentist. However, if you do not currently have a dentist, you may contact Bellevue Dentists, Dr Patricia Pauley or Dr Cynthia Pauley, to set up a dental exam. Both cosmetic doctors can be contacted at info@brooksidedental.com in Bellevue, WA, and additional information may be viewed at their Bellevue Cosmetic Dentistry website.

BABY TEETH AND STEM CELL PRODUCTION: HOW BABY TEETH CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE

The following article is reproduced without any alterations from the Woman Dentist Journal 2009. The author of the original article is Joanne Oppenheim, DDS, a pediatric dentist in Illinois. As Bellevue Cosmetic Dentists we do not normally print other peoples’ articles, but this discussion of stem cells harvested from baby teeth is something of very high interest for later life health of an individual. Therefore, we felt we should publish it on our blog site in its original and unedited form. The only thing is that the tissue culture cell photos by Dr Mao are not reproduced here. However, the tissue photos may be seen in the original article or in the article that we posted on our other Cosmetic Bellevue Dentist Blog.

Woman Dentist Journal 2009 Baby Teeth and Stem Cells

As the article points out, stem cells may be taken from baby teeth and preserved for many years for potential use to cure a disease as children age and grow older. My interest in stem cell preservation and research began about 12 years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter. I remember reading an article about saving the cells from the umbilical cord after the birth of the child for research. A week before my due date, I picked up the kit from a hospital and told my doctor about my wishes to preserve the umbilical cord stem cells for my daughter. To my surprise, my obstetrician had never done this procedure before. I quickly realized that this would be a learning experience for all! While still in the delivery room just after my daughter was born, I explained to the doctor what to do with the cord blood.

Since that time, much has changed. I would venture to guess that almost anyone who is pregnant or has had a baby recently has heard about cord blood banking. And since the birth of my daughter, my nieces and nephews have had their cord blood saved as an insurance policy for their future.

In the spring of 2008, I read an article about preserving the stem cells from baby teeth. My first thought was that it was a waste having all of my children’s teeth sent to the tooth fairy instead of to StemSave. During the annual American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry meeting in May, I spoke with the people at the StemSave table. They were doing the same thing with baby teeth as the people 12 years ago were doing with the cord blood.

The value of stem cells in the curing of so many of the deadliest diseases is much better understood today. If we can save the stem cells from baby teeth, it is like receiving another opportunity for the people who did not save their babies’ cord blood.

The more I’ve come to learn about stem cells, the more I realize the potential benefits to people. I like to think that since we’ve learned that very powerful stem cells exist in teeth, we dentists are on the frontlines of this emerging medicine. When I think of the potential of thousands of teeth that are discarded as medical waste, I realize that patients and parents of patients should be given the opportunity to decide if they want to hang on to those stem cells.

All of the parents of our patients who will soon be losing teeth — whether naturally or for orthodontic reasons — receive the pamphlet on StemSave. The parents decide if this is something they would be interested in. It’s a very personal decision, and I like to offer families all of the facts so they can make an informed decision. I recommend going to the Web site, but if they have any questions, they are welcome to call me.

Once parents choose to save their child’s baby teeth, we explain to the child that we will give them a special tooth box and the tooth fairy will still come to their house. There is so much emotion and nostalgia associated with losing baby teeth. While parents may want to take the traditional under-the-pillow route with the first tooth, we try to create a new sense of excitement with sending the tooth off to StemSave. We encourage the child to draw a picture or write a note to let the tooth fairy know where the tooth is and that we only need the stuff on the inside and she can take the stuff on the outside!

When a child comes in for the extraction of a tooth, nothing is different for me. It’s the parents’ responsibility to preregister with StemSave. They handle the transaction directly with StemSave so I don’t have any additional paperwork. When the child sits in the chair for the extraction, the parents have already set up their account with StemSave. Prior to the appointment, StemSave will send a personalized transport kit for the child to my office. The transport kit is ingeniously simple to use. After I extract the tooth, I just drop it into a vial which is marked for that patient. The vial has nutrients that keep the tooth intact. It is placed in the kit, which is designed to induce hypothermia in the tooth without the use of frozen gel packs, so the stem cells are protected during transport to StemSave’s lab. After recovering and securing the tooth in the kit, we notify stemsave directly and they arrange for UPS pickup, and the kit is delivered to their lab for processing.

Our hopes are that these teeth are never needed. Unfortunately, we cannot know who will have medical problems in the future and will need their stem cells for a cure. Whoever would have thought that your baby teeth could save your life?

Sources of Dental Stem Cells

In a child, the most accessible stem cells are from the oral cavity. For deciduous teeth, the best candidates are moderately resorbed canine and incisors with the presence of healthy pulp. In children, other sources of easily accessible stem cells are supernumerary teeth, mesodens, over-retained deciduous teeth associated with congenitally missing permanent teeth, and prophylactically removed deciduous molars for orthodontic indications.

Conceptually, dental stem cells have the potential to differentiate into neural cell lineages. Recently, investigators have discovered a unique type of stem cell in the dental pulp of deciduous teeth. Stem cells from deciduous teeth, which are formed during the sixth week of human development, behave differently than other adult stem cells. These immature stem cells are capable of extensive proliferation and differentiation, which make them an important resource of stem cells for the regeneration and repair of craniofacial defects, tooth loss, and bone regeneration. However, a number of recent studies show that stem cells from teeth may be manipulated to grow into cell types of a completely different tissue. This ability is called transdifferentiation or plasticity, and different types of adult stem cells have varying degrees of plasticity. Given their ability to produce and secrete neurotrophic factors, dental stem cells may also be beneficial for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and the repair of motoneurons following injury. Indeed, dental stem cells from deciduous teeth have been induced to express neural markers such as nestin. The expression of neural markers in dental stem cells stimulates the imagination for their potential use in neural regeneration such as in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The potential of dental stem cells in both dental and non-dental regeneration continues to be further explored by researchers. Dental stem cells that have been isolated to date, either from deciduous teeth or permanent teeth, are considered non-embryonic or adult stem cells.

Stem cells recovered from dental pulp can differentiate into bone, cartilage, and adipose cells in vitro (outside the body).

A unique property of stem cells is that they are able to proliferate in vitro in a cell culture medium.

BELLEVUE DENTIST SUMMARIZES THE EXPANDED FUNCTIONS DENTAL ASSISTANT (EFDA) PROGRAM IN WASHINGTON STATE

Washington State in 2008 put into effect the expanded functions dental assistant (EFDA) program at three locations: Seattle Central Community College, South Puget Sound Community College, and Spokane Community College. The program is designed to give dental assistants expanded abilities in the restorative dentistry arena. The Washington State Dental Association (WSDA) was instrumental in moving the program through the state legislature by making sure the program was well understood by both dentists and legislators. Two classes of EFDAs have graduated from Seattle Central CC. The program is modeled after similar programs in the Indian Health Services, the US Army and the US Navy, which for differing years have had thriving EFDA programs. These EFDA graduates are now doing expanded duties in restorative dentistry in many dental offices in Washington State. Our lead assistant at Brookside Dental, Bellevue, WA, who has been with us for 15 years, has applied to the EFDA program at Seattle Central CC and if accepted will complete the program in the summer of 2010.

Washington State has for many years allowed dental hygienists to do expanded functions in restorative dentistry. Advantages to having the new program for dental assistants are first that dental assistants generally work more directly associated with the dentists and are therefore more experienced in restorative work and second that the more highly paid and more specialized dental hygienists will continue to provide hygiene care which can not be provided by dental assistants in Washington State.

According to the WSDA, the US Army has a report on EFDAs that indicates that dentists that work with an EFDA provider are 40 percent more productive than their counterpart dentists working without an EFDA without any compromise in the quality of dental care delivered to the patients.

Although the end result is the same and should allow more people to have access to high quality dentistry, the route to graduation at the three schools is different. SCCC has their students do all of their hands-on clinical training on patients that come to the vocational schools’ clinic and follow that with a 20-24 hour externship at a community health clinic. The other two schools use private dentists under contract to teach individual students within the private practice offices during the regular day while seeing scheduled patients of record. Administrators at the different schools champion the method that they use as the better model. Ultimately all EFDA graduates must pass a state board examination to receive an EFDA credential.

It may be too early to determine if EFDAs will increase the access to care for people, but there appears to be some anecdotal evidence that they are helping to address a portion of that problem according to the WSDA. There is no doubt that the Indian Health Care model definitely provides increased access to care for those people served by those providers. At this time, the EFDAs are being trained in three metropolitan areas where dentists are not in short supply as they are in some of the smaller communities in the state. These smaller communities will need to be given the opportunity to have their dental assistants be able to enroll in some type of EFDA program in the future. Additional information regarding this program can be obtained at the SCCC EFDA program, email efda@sccd.ctc.edu, SPSCC EFDA program, email jmartin@spscc.ctc.edu, or at SCC EFDA program, email bmoneymaker@scc.spokane.edu.

SEATTLE VOCATIONAL INSTITUTE GIVING CAMPAIGN

The Seattle Vocational Institute is beginning its Annual Giving Campaign to support the Dental Assistant students at SVI. Educated and motivated students are the key to a productive society. That is the primary reason that SVI has focused on providing a quality education in the dental field with longterm career possibilities to over fifty graduates of this program each year.

It is hoped that as many people as possible can donate to this well run program which trains minority students and students of color for jobs as dental assistants. The majority of the Seattle Vocational Institute students are low-income, minority students who rely on financial aid and scholarships to be able to attend school. The SVI dental assisting program has maintained a phenominal 98% job placement rate for its graduates. Statistics compiled by the Washington State Board of Health Disparities reported that SVI trained and placed the highest percentage of under-represented minorities who graduated from any American Dental Association accredited dental program in Washington State.

The Seattle Vocational Institute students complete externships at area public dental clinics and private dental offices where they gain hands on experience before they accept a permanent position in the dental field. Much of the success of the SVI Dental Assistant Program can be attributed to a generous grant from the Seattle Foundation and donations from Patterson Dental Company and Arnold Dental Company. New technology, which includes digital radiography and intra-oral imaging, was added to the SVI dental program to aide both the student curriculum and the patient care services. This new technology helps the dental assistant students enter the workplace with state-of-the-art learning and ability. Many individuals, foundations, and companies have supported this valuable program. Donors may contact Dr Pollene Speed McIntyre, Dental Clinic Director, Seattle Vocational Institute, at pspeed@sccd.ctc.edu or visit the website of SVI at http://sviweb.sccd.edu/clinic.
