Dr Cynthia Pauley Elected New President of Seattle-King County Dental Society

Dr Cynthia Pauley, Bellevue Cosmetic Dentist, recently was elected as the new President of the Seattle-King County Dental Society (SKCDS) in April 2010. She has served as Secretary of SKCDS and also as a member of the SKCDS Executive Council for 8 years, during which time she was a delegate to the Washington State Dental Association for two terms. During her time on the Executive Council, she been involved in several projects to help the under served citizens of King County, including working on the Smile Mobile which serves people in out lying areas. Currently, she is involved with projects that include “The Northwest Kidney Foundation” and SKCDS Dentists working together on the dentistry care needs of kidney transplant candidates and assisting them to get validated for the new kidney list. Dr Cindy recently has written two articles for the SKCDS Quarterly titled, and “ The Beginnings of Something Great: A Joint Effort to Support Kidney Patients” (2008) and “A Morning with Medical Teams International” (2010). These articles detail individual projects involving the efforts to bring dental services to the under served people in the Seattle-King County area. The mission statement of SKCDS, “We are behind every smile in King County”, is actively being carried out by Dr Cynthia Pauley, a Bellevue Dentist. The overall goal is to have as many members of the SKCDS working toward this as a common goal. Certainly, a major goal is to see that young children receive adequate dental care and exhibit an overall reduction rate of childhood cavities. Dr Cindy has been a Bellevue Dentist in the Seattle Area since graduating from dental school at the University of the Pacific in 1992. Along with her mother, Dr Patricia Pauley, they practice family dentistry with an emphasis on Bellevue Cosmetic Dentistry.

Since its founding in 1892, the Seattle-King County Dental Society has promoted the highest levels of oral health for the citizens of King County. Through various venues they provided essential support, dental information and educational opportunities for dental professionals practicing dentistry within King County. The overview page of SKCDS provides more information about resources that are provided to the general public and to dental health professionals. The Seattle-King County Dental Society is a membership organization of approximately 1,700 dentists practicing in greater King County, Washington. It is the largest professional dental organization based in Washington State and is a major component society of both the Washington State Dental Association and the American Dental Association. The Seattle-King County Dental Foundation, established in 1992, works in association with the Sea-King Society to provide access to dental care for many of the neglected and poorer citizens of King County. The Foundation also supports dental educational programs for members of the public and for healthcare professionals. Each year the Foundation has an annual auction which is attended by hundreds of dentists and their spouses, which brings in several hundred thousand dollars to help finance the various projects of the society.

BELLEVUE DENTIST NOTES BABY TEETH YIELD STEM CELLS

BABY TEETH AND STEM CELL PRODUCTION: HOW BABY TEETH CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE

The following article is reproduced without any alterations from the Woman Dentist Journal 2009. The author of the original article is Joanne Oppenheim, DDS, a pediatric dentist in Illinois. As Bellevue Cosmetic Dentists we do not normally print other peoples’ articles, but this discussion of stem cells harvested from baby teeth is something of very high interest for later life health of an individual. Therefore, we felt we should publish it on our blog site in its original and unedited form. The only thing is that the tissue culture cell photos by Dr Mao are not reproduced here. However, the tissue photos may be seen in the original article or in the article that we posted on our other Cosmetic Bellevue Dentist Blog.

Woman Dentist Journal 2009 Baby Teeth and Stem Cells

As the article points out, stem cells may be taken from baby teeth and preserved for many years for potential use to cure a disease as children age and grow older. My interest in stem cell preservation and research began about 12 years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter. I remember reading an article about saving the cells from the umbilical cord after the birth of the child for research. A week before my due date, I picked up the kit from a hospital and told my doctor about my wishes to preserve the umbilical cord stem cells for my daughter. To my surprise, my obstetrician had never done this procedure before. I quickly realized that this would be a learning experience for all! While still in the delivery room just after my daughter was born, I explained to the doctor what to do with the cord blood.

Since that time, much has changed. I would venture to guess that almost anyone who is pregnant or has had a baby recently has heard about cord blood banking. And since the birth of my daughter, my nieces and nephews have had their cord blood saved as an insurance policy for their future.

In the spring of 2008, I read an article about preserving the stem cells from baby teeth. My first thought was that it was a waste having all of my children’s teeth sent to the tooth fairy instead of to StemSave. During the annual American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry meeting in May, I spoke with the people at the StemSave table. They were doing the same thing with baby teeth as the people 12 years ago were doing with the cord blood.

The value of stem cells in the curing of so many of the deadliest diseases is much better understood today. If we can save the stem cells from baby teeth, it is like receiving another opportunity for the people who did not save their babies’ cord blood.

The more I’ve come to learn about stem cells, the more I realize the potential benefits to people. I like to think that since we’ve learned that very powerful stem cells exist in teeth, we dentists are on the frontlines of this emerging medicine. When I think of the potential of thousands of teeth that are discarded as medical waste, I realize that patients and parents of patients should be given the opportunity to decide if they want to hang on to those stem cells.

All of the parents of our patients who will soon be losing teeth — whether naturally or for orthodontic reasons — receive the pamphlet on StemSave. The parents decide if this is something they would be interested in. It’s a very personal decision, and I like to offer families all of the facts so they can make an informed decision. I recommend going to the Web site, but if they have any questions, they are welcome to call me.

Once parents choose to save their child’s baby teeth, we explain to the child that we will give them a special tooth box and the tooth fairy will still come to their house. There is so much emotion and nostalgia associated with losing baby teeth. While parents may want to take the traditional under-the-pillow route with the first tooth, we try to create a new sense of excitement with sending the tooth off to StemSave. We encourage the child to draw a picture or write a note to let the tooth fairy know where the tooth is and that we only need the stuff on the inside and she can take the stuff on the outside!

When a child comes in for the extraction of a tooth, nothing is different for me. It’s the parents’ responsibility to preregister with StemSave. They handle the transaction directly with StemSave so I don’t have any additional paperwork. When the child sits in the chair for the extraction, the parents have already set up their account with StemSave. Prior to the appointment, StemSave will send a personalized transport kit for the child to my office. The transport kit is ingeniously simple to use. After I extract the tooth, I just drop it into a vial which is marked for that patient. The vial has nutrients that keep the tooth intact. It is placed in the kit, which is designed to induce hypothermia in the tooth without the use of frozen gel packs, so the stem cells are protected during transport to StemSave’s lab. After recovering and securing the tooth in the kit, we notify stemsave directly and they arrange for UPS pickup, and the kit is delivered to their lab for processing.

Our hopes are that these teeth are never needed. Unfortunately, we cannot know who will have medical problems in the future and will need their stem cells for a cure. Whoever would have thought that your baby teeth could save your life?

Sources of Dental Stem Cells

In a child, the most accessible stem cells are from the oral cavity. For deciduous teeth, the best candidates are moderately resorbed canine and incisors with the presence of healthy pulp. In children, other sources of easily accessible stem cells are supernumerary teeth, mesodens, over-retained deciduous teeth associated with congenitally missing permanent teeth, and prophylactically removed deciduous molars for orthodontic indications.

Conceptually, dental stem cells have the potential to differentiate into neural cell lineages. Recently, investigators have discovered a unique type of stem cell in the dental pulp of deciduous teeth. Stem cells from deciduous teeth, which are formed during the sixth week of human development, behave differently than other adult stem cells. These immature stem cells are capable of extensive proliferation and differentiation, which make them an important resource of stem cells for the regeneration and repair of craniofacial defects, tooth loss, and bone regeneration. However, a number of recent studies show that stem cells from teeth may be manipulated to grow into cell types of a completely different tissue. This ability is called transdifferentiation or plasticity, and different types of adult stem cells have varying degrees of plasticity. Given their ability to produce and secrete neurotrophic factors, dental stem cells may also be beneficial for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and the repair of motoneurons following injury. Indeed, dental stem cells from deciduous teeth have been induced to express neural markers such as nestin. The expression of neural markers in dental stem cells stimulates the imagination for their potential use in neural regeneration such as in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The potential of dental stem cells in both dental and non-dental regeneration continues to be further explored by researchers. Dental stem cells that have been isolated to date, either from deciduous teeth or permanent teeth, are considered non-embryonic or adult stem cells.

Stem cells recovered from dental pulp can differentiate into bone, cartilage, and adipose cells in vitro (outside the body).

A unique property of stem cells is that they are able to proliferate in vitro in a cell culture medium.

SEATTLE VOCATIONAL INSTITUTE ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN

SEATTLE VOCATIONAL INSTITUTE GIVING CAMPAIGN

The Seattle Vocational Institute is beginning its Annual Giving Campaign to support the Dental Assistant students at SVI. Educated and motivated students are the key to a productive society. That is the primary reason that SVI has focused on providing a quality education in the dental field with longterm career possibilities to over fifty graduates of this program each year.

It is hoped that as many people as possible can donate to this well run program which trains minority students and students of color for jobs as dental assistants. The majority of the Seattle Vocational Institute students are low-income, minority students who rely on financial aid and scholarships to be able to attend school. The SVI dental assisting program has maintained a phenominal 98% job placement rate for its graduates. Statistics compiled by the Washington State Board of Health Disparities reported that SVI trained and placed the highest percentage of under-represented minorities who graduated from any American Dental Association accredited dental program in Washington State.

The Seattle Vocational Institute students complete externships at area public dental clinics and private dental offices where they gain hands on experience before they accept a permanent position in the dental field. Much of the success of the SVI Dental Assistant Program can be attributed to a generous grant from the Seattle Foundation and donations from Patterson Dental Company and Arnold Dental Company. New technology, which includes digital radiography and intra-oral imaging, was added to the SVI dental program to aide both the student curriculum and the patient care services. This new technology helps the dental assistant students enter the workplace with state-of-the-art learning and ability. Many individuals, foundations, and companies have supported this valuable program. Donors may contact Dr Pollene Speed McIntyre, Dental Clinic Director, Seattle Vocational Institute, at pspeed@sccd.ctc.edu or visit the website of SVI at http://sviweb.sccd.edu/clinic.

Seattle Vocational Institute Dental Clinic Has Annual Fund Raiser for the Dental Assistant Program

Photo: Dr Gil Pauley, Dr Pat Pauley, Dr Pollene Speed, Dr Haydon Mar, Dr Richard Ferguson at Seattle Vocational Institute Dental Clinic Fund Raiser

Each year the Seattle Vocational Institute has a fund raiser for the Dental Assisting Program to insure that as many students as possible have access to the program and are trained in a modern dental environment for entry level employment within the dental industry. SVI’s dental assistant program has been granted full accreditation by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. The Seattle Vocational Institute Dental Assisting Program is part of the Community Outreach Program designed to improve the health and well being of people in the Seattle, WA, area. Along with the associated dental hygiene program, it is designed to provide oral health care to childern in great need of dental access and also it gives special attention and focus to minorities and underserved segments of the population. One way that childern can best receive preventative dentistry is by the application of dental sealants to their teeth. The focus on minorities is also a major goal in choosing students for both the dental assisting program and the dental hygiene program. The success of the dental assisting school is exceptional and enjoys a student placement of nearly 100% for those students that successfully complete their training into dental jobs throughout the Seattle area. Both the dental assisting and the dental hygiene programs have state-of-the-art clinical teaching facilities. They are associated with Seattle Central Community College. They have a very strong board of directors composed of dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and other professionals associated with the field of dentistry. Dr Pollene Speed, in addition to having a private dental practice, is the Director of the SVI Dental Assistanting Program. Dr Speed is also the Chairperson of the Acceptance Committee for the University of Washington Dentistry Program. Dr Gil Pauley serves as Chairperson of Board of Directors for the SVI Dental Assistanting Program where he has worked with Dr Speed for about five years. Prior to that they were associates at the University of Washington where they collaborated and published two peer-reviewed scientific papers. Dr Pat Pauley worked with Dr Speed for three years on the Acceptance Committee for the University of Washington Dentistry Program.

Endowed Student Support Fund from Doctors at Brookside Dental

December 23rd, 2008 Brookside Dental No comments

GILBERT B. PAULEY Endowed Student Support Fund

Dr Gilbert B. Pauley is a professor emeritus of SAFS and a past member and leader of the Washington Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit (Coop Unit). Gil had a long, distinguished career at the School and Coop, serving from 1974 until 1997. He currently works with his wife (Dr Patricia Pauley) and his daughter (Dr Cindy Pauley) who are family and cosmetic dentists in the Seattle, WA, area. Gil takes care of the business and internet aspects of their dental practice at Brookside Dental, Bellevue, WA.

In 2002, Gil and his wife Dr Patricia Pauley established a fund to support UW and Washington State University students conducting Coop research. The fund has been used to award graduate students for best oral presentations and scientific poster presentations at the Unit’s Annual Cooperators Meeting. The funds pay for travel expenses to conferences, where the students present the results of their research. In 2007, through the cooperative effort of the University of Washington and the Drs Pauley (Gil and Pat), the award fund established in 2002 became a permanent “Endowed Student Support Fund” at the University of Washington.

Dr Gilbert Pauley

Dr Gilbert Pauley

The Coop Unit, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in May 2007, is one of 40 units in 38 states that constitute the national Cooperative Research Unit Program (part of the US Geological Survey). Working with universities, state fish and wildlife agencies, and the Wildlife Management Institute, the various Coop Units coordinate research and graduate training programs. The longstanding relationship that the University of Washington Coop Unit has had with SAFS has yielded mutually beneficial results, providing opportunities and funding for numerous students to pursue research, and in turn, helping the Coop address pressing wildlife and fish management issues.

Gil explained why they chose to support student travel: “Attending scientific conferences is critical to student development. It gives students the chance to practice communicating in front of a group of peers about their work; and, by presenting their work before it’s published, they have a chance to get some feedback.” He added, “These conferences enable students to interact and network with the rest of the scientific community.” Also, this is a way that we as a family can give something back to the University of Washington, where I, my wife and my daughter all received a major portion of our educations.

Several winners of the Pauley Travel Award spoke to the value of the fund: Jennifer McIntyre—oral presentation winner, 2006—said “This generous award allowed me to travel to Newfoundland, Canada, for the Seventh International Congress on Fish Biology, where I was awarded the best student paper in my session. Without the Pauley Award, the trip would have been prohibitively expensive.”

Mike Mazur—oral presentation winner in 2005—used the fund to attend the Hydroacoustic Mobile Survey Workshop in Wyoming. He reflected, “The award enabled me to present my research to applied research scientists and managers, beyond the Pacific Northwest, at a small, informal venue, where I forged valuable relationships critical to any young scientist’s success. Thanks to the Pauley Fund, I was able to bridge the gap between the academic and applied science world and interact with a group of researchers that ordinarily would not know about my work.”

We at the SASF are pleased to announce the establishment of the Gilbert B. Pauley Endowed Student Support Fund. This fund will help ensure travel funding, in perpetuity, for students awarded at each year’s Annual Cooperators’ Meeting.

We extend our gratitude to Gil and Pat Pauley for their generous support of students in the Coop and SAFS programs. For more information on giving at SAFS, please contact Cara Mathison, caram@u.washington.edu, 206-685-1456. For more information on the Campaign for Students, please see how to fund students at the University of Washington.

We have some exciting news to share with you. Drs Patricia Pauley DDS, Cynthia Pauley DDS, and Brian Cave DDS have all received the highest “A+” rating under this new system of the Better Business Bureau. The letter rating is actually awarded to the individual dental businesses of these dentists. Brookside Dental, Bellevue, WA, has received an “A+” Rating, which is the highest rating available in the new Better Business Bureau grading system. Dr Cynthia Pauley and Dr Patricia Pauley are Family and Cosmetic Dentists at Brookside Dental. Complete information and the BBB Reliability Report regarding the Brookside Dental Better Business Bureau “A+” review is available online. Dayton Dental, Edmonds, WA, also received the highest BBB Rating of “A+” , where Dr Brian Cave (Dr Cindy Pauley’s husband) is located as a Family and Cosmetic Dentist. Information and the Reliability Report including business history related to the Dayton Dental Better Business Bureau “A+” review also is available online.

This new Better Business Bureau letter rating system has been set up to help consumers identify more reliable businesses. The BBB ratings are objective, based on a computer generated formula, and are evaluated on 16 different factors. The letter rating system is based on standards that were developed using objective information and actual incidences of each rated business’ behavior. For consumers, BBB Accreditation remains the most reliable way for them to identify trustworthy businesses. The BBB issues Reliability Reports on all businesses, whether or not they are a BBB Accredited business. However, if a business does have BBB Accreditation, it will be noted in the Reliability Report. This report is a summary of each individual company’s BBB file, which includes the company history along with any consumer issues and government actions. Accredited businesses may display the BBB Accreditation Seal on their websites only if they have met the BBB accreditation standards. Both Brookside Dental, Bellevue, WA, and Dayton Dental, Edmonds, WA, are Accredited BBB members in good standing and both family and cosmetic dental offices proudly display the BBB Accreditation Seal on their websites.

BELLEVUE COSMETIC DENTIST DISCUSSES NEW BEAUTY TECHNIQUES IN DENTISTRY

BELLEVUE COSMETIC DENTIST DR CYNTHIA PAULEY

BELLEVUE COSMETIC DENTIST DR CYNTHIA PAULEY

In the February 2008 Seattle Magazine’s “THE BEAUTY ISSUE”, Dr Cynthia Pauley of Brookside Dental in Bellevue, Washington, was one of two experts in the Cosmetic Dentistry field asked to discuss, “More Natural-Looking Veneers” and “Gentler Whitening”. Veneers which are the very thin laminates that are used primarily on anterior teeth to cover stained, misshapen, chipped and broken teeth. They can be used to create beautiful smiles for people that have less than perfect teeth. Today’s veneers, which cover the front and biting surface of the teeth, have a natural translucency that did not exist with the first veneers used. The techniques for using them are improving, along with the materials, so that less natural tooth structure needs to be removed to accommodate the veneers. Between the existing technology and materials available today, porcelain veneers can be in place for a new smile within two visits to Cosmetic Dentist’s office.

Costs will vary in different geographic areas and even within the same regions. Selection of a cosmetic dentist should not be made upon cost alone, although it is certainly a major factor to consider. Whether you need a complete smile makeover or only a smile enhancement, look for a Cosmetic Dentist that has advanced training in various aspects of Cosmetic Dentistry, uses modern techniques and materials, and may even have an on-site porcelain artist to create the veneers. This will allow them to create beautiful and natural appearing smiles. Always ask to see examples of their cosmetic artistry and pick a dentist around whom you personally feel comfortable. When discussing your Cosmetic Dentistry needs, it is not unusual to get a second opinion. Some dentists may be able to accomplish a beautiful smile with a conservative approach that will give you a smile that is just as beautiful as a more extensive and invasive approach. Everyone does not need 8 to 10 veneers on their upper teeth to have a beautiful smile. Often a beautiful smile can be accomplished with only 1, 2, or 3 veneers. It should be noted that it is much more difficult to create a beautiful smile when an odd number, 1, 3 or 5, of veneers are used than when an even number, 2, 4 or 6, are used to create your smile. The Brookside Dental website has 10 people with smile makeovers accomplished with a variety of different cosmetic dentistry techniques. Among these 10 is a person that has had either 1, 2 or 3 veneers to create their smiles as well as people with more extensive numbers of veneers used to create their smiles.

Veneers should be used on anyone that cannot obtain the results they want with professional tooth whitening and/or composite bonding. Dr Cindy states in the article, “That we can now restore teeth to a very high level of esthetics and the future is only going to get better.” Additional information on porcelain veneers and smile extreme makeovers is available.

Dr Cynthia Pauley is in private dental practice in Bellevue, WA, and has taught Restorative Dentistry at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, where she received an outstanding teaching award. Additionally, she was selected a TOP TEN COSMETIC DENTIST in both Cosmetic and Family Dentistry by Seattle Magazine in 2005.
