Currently, she is involved with projects that include “The Northwest Kidney Foundation” and SKCDS Dentists working together on the dentistry care needs of kidney transplant candidates and assisting them to get validated for the new kidney list. Dr Cindy recently has written two articles for the SKCDS Quarterly titled, and “ The Beginnings of Something Great: A Joint Effort to Support Kidney Patients” (2008) and “A Morning with Medical Teams International” (2010). These articles detail individual projects involving the efforts to bring dental services to the under served people in the Seattle-King County area. The mission statement of SKCDS, “We are behind every smile in King County”, is actively being carried out by Dr Cynthia Pauley, a Bellevue Dentist. The overall goal is to have as many members of the SKCDS working toward this as a common goal. Certainly, a major goal is to see that young children receive adequate dental care and exhibit an overall reduction rate of childhood cavities. Dr Cindy has been a Bellevue Dentist in the Seattle Area since graduating from dental school at the University of the Pacific in 1992. Along with her mother, Dr Patricia Pauley, they practice family dentistry with an emphasis on Bellevue Cosmetic Dentistry.

Since its founding in 1892, the Seattle-King County Dental Society has promoted the highest levels of oral health for the citizens of King County. Through various venues they provided essential support, dental information and educational opportunities for dental professionals practicing dentistry within King County. The overview page of SKCDS provides more information about resources that are provided to the general public and to dental health professionals. The Seattle-King County Dental Society is a membership organization of approximately 1,700 dentists practicing in greater King County, Washington. It is the largest professional dental organization based in Washington State and is a major component society of both the Washington State Dental Association and the American Dental Association. The Seattle-King County Dental Foundation, established in 1992, works in association with the Sea-King Society to provide access to dental care for many of the neglected and poorer citizens of King County. The Foundation also supports dental educational programs for members of the public and for healthcare professionals. Each year the Foundation has an annual auction which is attended by hundreds of dentists and their spouses, which brings in several hundred thousand dollars to help finance the various projects of the society.

Endowed Student Support Fund from Doctors at Brookside Dental

December 23rd, 2008 Brookside Dental No comments

GILBERT B. PAULEY Endowed Student Support Fund

Dr Gilbert B. Pauley is a professor emeritus of SAFS and a past member and leader of the Washington Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit (Coop Unit). Gil had a long, distinguished career at the School and Coop, serving from 1974 until 1997. He currently works with his wife (Dr Patricia Pauley) and his daughter (Dr Cindy Pauley) who are family and cosmetic dentists in the Seattle, WA, area. Gil takes care of the business and internet aspects of their dental practice at Brookside Dental, Bellevue, WA.

In 2002, Gil and his wife Dr Patricia Pauley established a fund to support UW and Washington State University students conducting Coop research. The fund has been used to award graduate students for best oral presentations and scientific poster presentations at the Unit’s Annual Cooperators Meeting. The funds pay for travel expenses to conferences, where the students present the results of their research. In 2007, through the cooperative effort of the University of Washington and the Drs Pauley (Gil and Pat), the award fund established in 2002 became a permanent “Endowed Student Support Fund” at the University of Washington.

The Coop Unit, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in May 2007, is one of 40 units in 38 states that constitute the national Cooperative Research Unit Program (part of the US Geological Survey). Working with universities, state fish and wildlife agencies, and the Wildlife Management Institute, the various Coop Units coordinate research and graduate training programs. The longstanding relationship that the University of Washington Coop Unit has had with SAFS has yielded mutually beneficial results, providing opportunities and funding for numerous students to pursue research, and in turn, helping the Coop address pressing wildlife and fish management issues.

Gil explained why they chose to support student travel: “Attending scientific conferences is critical to student development. It gives students the chance to practice communicating in front of a group of peers about their work; and, by presenting their work before it’s published, they have a chance to get some feedback.” He added, “These conferences enable students to interact and network with the rest of the scientific community.” Also, this is a way that we as a family can give something back to the University of Washington, where I, my wife and my daughter all received a major portion of our educations.

Several winners of the Pauley Travel Award spoke to the value of the fund: Jennifer McIntyre—oral presentation winner, 2006—said “This generous award allowed me to travel to Newfoundland, Canada, for the Seventh International Congress on Fish Biology, where I was awarded the best student paper in my session. Without the Pauley Award, the trip would have been prohibitively expensive.”

Mike Mazur—oral presentation winner in 2005—used the fund to attend the Hydroacoustic Mobile Survey Workshop in Wyoming. He reflected, “The award enabled me to present my research to applied research scientists and managers, beyond the Pacific Northwest, at a small, informal venue, where I forged valuable relationships critical to any young scientist’s success. Thanks to the Pauley Fund, I was able to bridge the gap between the academic and applied science world and interact with a group of researchers that ordinarily would not know about my work.”

We at the SASF are pleased to announce the establishment of the Gilbert B. Pauley Endowed Student Support Fund. This fund will help ensure travel funding, in perpetuity, for students awarded at each year’s Annual Cooperators’ Meeting.

We extend our gratitude to Gil and Pat Pauley for their generous support of students in the Coop and SAFS programs. For more information on giving at SAFS, please contact Cara Mathison, caram@u.washington.edu, 206-685-1456. For more information on the Campaign for Students, please see how to fund students at the University of Washington.

PIERRE FAUCHARD ACADEMY HONORS NEW DENTISTS

November 14th, 2006 Brookside Dental No comments

PIERRE FAUCHARD ACADEMY HONORS SEVEN WASHINGTON STATE DENTISTS

The Pierre Fauchard Academy is an International Dental Honor Organization that recognizes outstanding dentists from around the world. Dr Patricia Pauley DDS, Brookside Dental, Bellevue, WA, was inducted into the prestigious Pierre Fauchard Academy on July 13, 2006. Dr Pat Pauley was one of only seven new Dental Fellows from Washington State inducted into the Academy in 2006. The Academy celebrates the achievements of its members at the time of induction. There are only 132 Washington State dentists that are Dental Fellows in the Pierre Fauchard Academy. This honor recognizes the many years of dedicated service to the community and to dentistry by Dr Pauley. Dr Barry Feder, President, Washington State Section, Pierre Fauchard Academy, presented medals to the seven new Pierre Fauchard Washington State Dentists at the induction ceremony on July 13, 2006, in Seattle, WA.

The Academy seeks to support the highest ideals of dentistry throughout the world in both ethical and moral practice, through service to community, country and profession. The Pierre Fauchard Academy, founded in 1936 is comprised of fellows from around the world who have distinguished themselves in their commitment and support of educational, community and research activities within the dental profession. Through its Foundation, the Academy provides grants for a range of academic and public health projects and programs, as well as financial encouragement to dental undergraduate students.

Dr Pierre Fauchard (1678-1761), the father of modern dentistry, styled himself as a chirurgien-dentiste (surgeon dentist), the first practitioner to use this title professionally. He was responsible for developing some new and ingenious designs for dental appliances, which greatly improved the outlook for those patients unfortunate enough to require them. Patients traveled great distances to utilize his skills and services. He was a surgeon in the French Navy, following which he began working as a dentist in Western France. He read widely and studied crafts such as watch-making and jewelry-making, from which he adapted techniques and instruments that he felt were useful to dentistry. His unprecedented competency and conscientiousness earned him an outstanding reputation as a dentist of unparalleled skill and acumen. Dr Fauchards advice and talents were regularly in demand by some of the most accomplished surgeons of his time.

The practice of dentistry at that time had been stifled by jealousy, because dental knowledge and techniques were regarded as valuable property by the more competent and skilled practitioners, and were rarely shared with other dental colleagues. In a significant break with tradition, Dr Fauchard published a textbook in 1728 entitled Le Chriurgien Dentiste ou Trait des Dent (The Surgeon Dentist or Treatise on the Teeth) in two volumes of over 800 pages, which included many illustrations. In this way Dr Fauchard shared his considerable knowledge and wealth of observations with colleagues and students, describing his techniques with exceptional clarity and detail. Many of his suggestions were radical for dental practice in those days, but his practice of seating patients rather than having them lie down is still used today. Additional information about the Pierre Fauchard Academy may be obtained at www.fauchard.org .
