Swollen gums may be a sign of periodontal, or gum disease. If left untreated, swollen gums can lead to pus, bleeding gums, and of course, infection. It is important to visit a seattle dentist immediately if you notice that your gums are swelling for any reason.
Swollen gums may be due to irritation of the gums from dental devices, such as dentures or orthodontic devices. Improper fitting dentures or braces with irritating wires may be the culprit for swollen, red gums. It is important to have the dental devices readjusted to fit you, because these irritations can also lead to infection.
Swollen gums may also be due to hormonal changes in the body, particularly female bodies. Women undergoing puberty or who are pregnant may experience hormonal changes that make their teeth and gums more sensitive. Because of this, they are more susceptible to gum diseases and be especially careful to maintain proper oral care.
Most importantly, swollen gums are a symptom of development of gum diseases. Gingivitis, the mildest form of gum disease is characterized by dark red, swollen gums, and pain and tenderness in the gum area. If any of these symptoms are felt, a seattle dentist should be contacted immediately to prevent conditions from becoming worse and irreversible.
